New demographic data paints a revealing portrait of the growth of the community in terms of age and sex. While it remains the oldest population in the country, residents in The Villages metropolitan statistical area aged at only a 3.5 percent rate from 2013 to 2017, according to Census Bureau data released Thursday. The median age last year for both sexes was 67.4, but 67 for males and 67.7 for females. The largest numeric change occurred within the age bracket of Villagers at least 65 or older at 17,299 new residents. Within that category, the 70 to 74 age bracket grew by 5,893 residents for a 35.8 percent gain and the 75 to 79 bracket grew by 5,107 residents for a 49.9 percent gain. However, the biggest five-year percentage increase occurred in the 80 to 84 age bracket, with 2,703 new residents for a 50.6 percent gain. By the way, women remain the majority demographic at 37,025 females to 34,249 males of all residents age 65 or older.
