Are You Optimistic About the Future of the Shopping Center Industry?

Last week we conducted a poll, “Are you optimistic about the future of the shopping center industry?” Respondents voted by dropping their business cards into the voting machine at our booth at ICSC RECon at the Las Vegas Convention Center.  The voting machine was on a coffee table located at the seating area at the front of our booth. It was the subject of much curiosity and a great conversation starter with booth visitors and passers by. Thanks to all of you that stopped by to participate. There were four possible answers, Yes, No, Maybe, and Ask me again next year.

There have been a lot of stories in the press recently about retail. Most of them, it seems, center around store closings or how internet retailers have been disrupting traditional retail. This is not “fake news,” but it does not tell the whole story. If your only exposure to this story were from the media, you might think that the shopping center industry was in a precipitous free fall. However, as a thirty year retail veteran, this is only one of many shocks our industry has undergone in that period. It is unlike the previous ones, but none of them have really resembled their predecessors. Each time, the industry has reemerged, and we have delivered a product that better meets the current needs and wants of our customers.

On the last day of RECon, Wednesday, we hosted the #LetsGetSmart Speaker Series at our booth. Our speakers led us on a deep dive that was a nuanced exploration of the state of the retail industry. With an almost 3 to 1 ratio of Yes votes to all other options combined, RECon participants appear to be optimistic about the future of the industry. Is it that we have blind spot? Do we see the glass as half full, rather than half empty? Or, is it that we don’t have scales on our eyes, we have the knowledge of past disruptions, and we are the engines of change?

New Feature: Listing Flyers

I am excited to announce that registered members can now create a flyer for any of their listings on QuantumListing! And it could not be any easier, either. Here’s how you do it:

  1. If you are not already signed in, click on the Sign In button at the upper right of any QuantumListing.com page. If you are not a member, click the REGISTER button
  2. Select the listing for which you want to create the flyer and go to its detail page by clicking on it.
  3. Click on the Create Flyer Button, it’s located below the listing image.
  4. Select which agent you want to appear on the flyer from the drop down menu.
  5. Click Create.

That’s it! You can now download or print it.

Are You Optimistic About the Future of the Shopping Center Industry?

ICSC REConThe shopping center industry is gathering in Las Vegas this week for RECon, the International Council of Shopping Center’s large national convention. People attend not only from the United States, but from all over the world. It’s a dynamic mix of retailers, developers, owners, brokers, architects, engineers, lawyers, CRE tech, media and more. Over 32,000 have pre-registered, and thousands more will register at the door. It’s going to be BIG. How big? 1200 exhibitors filling up 853,000 square feet of the Las Vegas Convention Center big. Plus dozens of parties, dinners and gatherings both in the Convention Center and throughout Las Vegas.

This is my 30th or 31st consecutive time attending this convention. In addition to being a great way to network, make new connections, and catch up with old friends, RECon is a fantastic opportunity to take the pulse of the industry. What better way to do that then to ask the simple, direct question, “Are you optimistic about the future of the shopping center industry?” We took our choice of answers from the old Magic 8 Ball. Your choices are Yes, No, Maybe, and Ask again tomorrow. You can take the poll one of three ways.

Liz Holland

Chief Executive Officer, Abbell Associates LLC and Chairman, ICSC 2016-2017

Elizabeth I. Holland is the Chief Executive Officer of Abbell Associates, a seventy-year old private real estate investment, development and management company with an approximately 3.5 million/sf portfolio, comprised of shopping center, office, and enclosed mall properties. She is responsible for overseeing all business and legal matters, including development, financing, leasing, capital and construction projects, and investor and tenant relations. Ms. Holland is active in the International Council of Shopping Centers, serving as the Vice Chairman (2015-2016) and a member of the Executive Board and Board of Trustees. Ms. Holland is also a member of the Urban Land Institute (ULI) and a member of the Commercial & Retail Council – Blue. Prior to joining Abbell, Ms. Holland was a Senior Staff Attorney with the National Bankruptcy Review Commission, a Congressional commission charged with making recommendations to the Bankruptcy Code. Previously, Ms. Holland was a restructuring and business reorganization attorney with the law firm of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom in New York. Prior to becoming an attorney, Ms. Holland was a fixed income portfolio manager at Brown, Brothers Harriman & Co, in New York.

 

Daniel Taub

President, DLC Management Corp.

Daniel Taub joined DLC in 1996.  As President, he is responsible for the day-to-day operation of DLC’s portfolio including property management, construction management, collections, marketing, legal and information technology and all administrative aspects of the firm, and its regional offices in Atlanta, Bethesda, and Chicago.  In addition, he also oversees property level and corporate insurance and all environmental issues at each of the company’s properties.

Mr. Taub is also responsible for spearheading DLC’s acquisition and financing of real estate assets.  In this capacity, he sources new properties from property owners and investment sales brokers nationwide, manages third-party consultants during due diligence, negotiates the terms of acquisitions, and arranges debt financing in the capital markets.  At DLC, Mr. Taub has been directly involved in the acquisition of more than 60 shopping centers, representing approximately 15 million square feet with a value of approximately $1.5 billion.

Mr. Taub is also an active member of the ICSC, and serves as the ICSC Open Air Conference Committee Chair.
